As a makeup artist, I am generally asked pretty similar questions on every shoot. I’m no mathematician, but I can put two and two together. In this scenario, two and two equals my conclusion that most women would like these questions answered . Here are the top questions I am asked about makeup, my answers and some REALLY SEXY pics.
Question: How do I contour?
There are many different ways to contour your face. I prefer to do my contouring before I powder my face. In my experience, using concealers to highlight and contour is more effective because it allows you to produce many different looks on top of the contouring and looks less cakey.
Tip to remember:
-the light color goes on places you want to brighten or make stand out
-the dark color goes on the place that you want to “disappear” or recede.
Here is what my face looks like when I contour:
I warned you about those sexy pics! #contour #selfie #duckface
Light Color (Highlight): MAC Prolongwear concealer in NC20. The light color should be one to two shades lighter than your skin tone. Applied to: forehead, bridge of the nose, undereyes, cheekbones, under my nose and on my chin.
Dark Color (Contour): Bobbi Brown Creamy Concealer in Chesnut. The dark shade should be one to two shades darker than your skin tone. Applied to: under my cheekbones, around my nose (to straighten and thin the bridge of my nose), the top of my forehead and under my chin.
After I apply these concealers, I take my Beauty Blender Sponge and apply a foundation in the same color as my skin tone on top of that in a light circular motion. This helps all the colors blend together. I used MakeUp Forever HD foundation in N135. The result looks like this:
Question: What is the biggest mistake you see people make with their makeup?
They don’t blend. Blending is essential to avoiding that over-done look. Always blend eyeshadows and blush to spread the product/color around and make it look seamless on your face. The easiest way to blend is to move your brush back and fourth in a circular motion until one color meets the next and there are no definitive lines on your face.
Question: How and where do I apply blush?
Blush should be applied to the apples of your cheek. If you are saying to yourself- “where in the world is the apple of my cheek?” look in the mirror and do a little half smile. The part that raises when you start to smile is the apple. For a fool proof version….X marks the spot, or in this case- the apple:
On the right side, the apple of my cheek is marked with an X. On the left side, I applied blush, using that circular blending motion I talked about above.
Question: What is your favorite foundation?
Oh, how funny you should ask. Please see: What is the best foundation? That should answer that one.
Question: What is the one product you could not live without?
Smith’s Rosebud Salve Lip Balm in a tube. Cannot, will not. It’s the love of my life.
Question: What is your favorite mascara?
To me, mascara is one of those products that you don’t HAVE to spend tons of money on. I like Loreal Voluminous in Carbon Black and have also really been digging Sephora’s Outrageous Volume in Ultra-Black. If you are having problems with your mascara clumping, my bet is that it’s you and not your mascara. What I mean is that you are probably using too much. Try and stick to one-two coats. Curling your lashes prior to application will help open the eye.
I tend to use volumizing mascara’s most, but if you are really looking for some length, use volumizing mascara on the part of the lash closest to the eye lids and lengthening mascara on the ends.
Question: What is your current favorite product?
Recently, I have really been loving Benefit Waat’s Up Highligher.
It is a gorgeous highlight that really shines when light hits it, but it is not overwhelming or gaudy. I love it to use for a really dewy look. It is also a great product to brighten those under eyes- just use in conjunction with concealer and you will look bright eyed and bushy tailed on even the roughest mornings.
Question: What is the main makeup game changer?
Filling in your eyebrows. A lot of people miss this one. Eyebrows are the frame of your face, they need to be seen. In this pic below, my left eyebrow is filled in and my right is not. Don’t even try and tell me you can’t see the difference.
For application, draw a line along the bottom of the eyebrow to form the shape you want the brow to be.(see small pic above) Next using a light, feather stroke movement, fill in the entire brow. Brush through with an eyebrow brush to make the look more natural.
Question: How do I make my lips look more full?
Lip liner really does work. When you are lining, connect the top peaks of your top lip with the liner and it will give lips a larger/more full appearance.
